Local Community
Known as the 'Friendly City" and "The City of Pure Water,"
semi-rural Zephyrhills is surrounded by rolling hills and
conveniently located at the Southeast corner of Pasco County in
west central Florida. As one of the Tampa Bay regions' largest
and most vibrant retirement communities, the city is
internationally known for skydiving facilities and Zephyrhills
Bottled Water; a pure spring water drawn from the seven deep
wells and bottled to be sold throughout the world. Zephyrhills
is just 35 miles from downtown Tampa. Tourists flock to this area
because of its proximity to beautiful gulf coast beaches and
nearby world renown attractions. A wealth of art, historical
museums and districts (such as Ybor City & Hyde Park), theatrical
and musical entertainment can be found in nearby Tampa, St.
Petersburg and Clearwater.
Within 80 miles of Zephyrhills, five major league training
facilities host teams from across the country. Tampa alone can
boast the top notch sporting action of NFL's Buccaneers and NHL's
Tampa Bay Lightning. The National League Devil Rays' baseball
team plays at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg and the Orlando
Magic shoot the hoops to the east in Orlando. Busch Gardens is
just 25 miles away, while Walt Disney World, Tarpon Springs Sponge
Docks, Sea World, Universal Studios, the Florida Aquarium and
Weeki Wachee Springs are all less than 70 miles away.
Attracted by the area's warm weather and verdant scenery, the
population of Zephyrhills swells from 51,000 year round residents
to about 85,000 during the winter months when the seasonal
residents arrive. The average temperature is a pleasant 71.4
degrees. During the winter months, highs are usually in the 60's
and, thanks to the refreshing gulf breezes and afternoon showers
the summer average is in the 80's.
Six county parks and four city parks supply Zephyrhills with
almost 200 acres of outdoor opportunities. Hillsborough River
State Park, just 6 miles south of the city, has 3950 acres with
nature trails that wind along the Hillsborough River through
stands of oaks, pines and hickory trees. It offers camping,
picnicking, canoe rentals, fishing and seasonal swimming.
In addition to the private 27 hole golf course in Betmar, there
are five other local golf courses that challenge the skill of area
golfers.
Two public libraries serve the reading and research needs of the
area plus
Betmar has its own library for residents. Tampa International
Airport, 35 miles to the south, serves 25 airlines which schedule
almost 300 daily domestic and international flights.
Two area hospitals are available to service the healthcare needs
of the community. East Pasco Medical Center in Zephyrhills is a
full service facility offering emergency care in trauma cases, a
wellness center, home heath care plus physical, occupational,
speech and hearing therapy. The medial center also has a wide
range of diagnostic, treatment and surgical services. The other
hospital is Pasco Community Hospital located 9 miles north of
Zephyrhills in Dade City. It is an acute care center with more
than 160 physicians on staff to ensure the health of its
patients. Betmar Park donates generously to the local Rescue
Squad to maintain the rapid response currently received from
emergency services.
Main Street Zephyrhills, Inc. is pursuing the redevelopment of
the downtown area to revitalize it by attracting customers to new
and existing businesses. Planned improvements for streets,
sidewalks, landscaping, lighting, benches and utilities are
ongoing in an effort to enhance and preserve that sociable and
relaxing small town feeling this community offers.
